Single Camera Production
Single Camera Production
A single camera production refers to a film being shot with
just one individual camera. These are often used by low budget productions,
including music videos, advertisements, dramas and low budget films, however it
may extend filming time and affect continuity in some cases. Single camera
productions can be undertaken by professional companies however it would be a lengthier
process when it comes to shooting different shots.
When filming with just one camera, you have to ensure that
the lighting is set up correctly to match the last time the camera was moved. Having a single camera production allows you to have more
flexibility with shots considering that you do not have to worry about any
other cameras being in the shot, in addition to its being easier to control and
focus on when gathering footage and transporting equipment.
Having a single
camera production also enables you to monitor each footage that has been shot
as you go along, which saves you time searching through different cameras for a
particular piece of footage during the production stage.
However, only shooting with one camera means that continuity
is more likely to be affected due to constantly having to move the camera
around when shooting each scene; including ensuring that actors’ positions hasn’t
changed and props haven’t been moved. The risk of losing footage will also be
higher due to only having footage stored on one camera.
Each of the various shots and camera angles is taken using the same camera, which is moved and reset to record each change of shot. The lighting setup is typically reconfigured for each camera setup. This can be fairly difficult especially when trying to film different shots and angles with a single camera as although getting the appropriate shot is essential when trying to set a particular atmosphere or emotion in the scene, you also could lose a lot of time and daylight trying to achieve those shots which can seriously affect continuity.
